Are You Eating Sushi Wrong? (A Fun Guide to Sushi Etiquette)

Sushi doesn’t come with a rulebook, but there are a few traditions that can elevate your experience.
At Zen Sushi & Sake, we love helping guests enjoy sushi the right way, without making it feel intimidating.
Chopsticks or Hands?
Both are acceptable! Nigiri is traditionally eaten with your hands, while chopsticks are perfect for rolls and sashimi.
Don’t Mix Wasabi Into Soy Sauce
It’s a common habit, but in traditional sushi dining, the chef already balances the wasabi for you.
Mixing it into soy sauce can overpower the fish’s natural flavor.
Dip Fish-Side Down
When eating nigiri, lightly dip the fish side, not the rice.
Why?
- It can fall apart
- Rice soaks up too much soy sauce
Eat in One Bite
Each piece is carefully crafted for balance. Try to eat it whole to experience the intended flavor combination.
Ginger Is Not a Topping
Pickled ginger (gari) is meant to cleanse your palate between bites, not to be eaten with sushi.
Bottom line: Sushi etiquette isn’t about strict rules, it’s about enhancing flavor and respecting the craft.
